RPE in Strength Training – How to Use the RPE Scale
If your training program says:
3 × 8 @ RPE 8
what does that actually mean?
RPE stands for Rating of Perceived Exertion and is used to describe how difficult a set feels.
In strength training, a RIR-based RPE scale from 1 to 10 is often used, where the higher values describe how close you are to failure.
As a practical rule of thumb:
RPE 10 ≈ 0 RIR
RPE 9 ≈ 1 RIR
RPE 8 ≈ 2 RIR
RPE 7 ≈ 3 RIR
This makes RPE a tool for adjusting training load based on your actual performance – not just what is written in your program.
What does RPE mean?
RPE means Rating of Perceived Exertion – a rating of how hard an effort feels.
Instead of only recording:
100 kg × 8
you can record:
100 kg × 8 @ RPE 8
Now you know more than what you lifted.
You also have an estimate of how demanding the set was.
That matters because the same weight and number of reps do not necessarily feel the same from one workout to another.
The RPE scale in strength training
Modern strength training often uses a RIR-based RPE scale.
A practical version looks like this:

The scale is not a physical measurement.
It is a subjective estimate of how difficult the set was.
The difference between RPE 8 and RPE 8.5 should therefore not be interpreted as mathematical precision.
The purpose is to describe training effort in a useful and reasonably consistent way.
A practical example
Imagine you are bench pressing.
On a good day, you perform:
100 kg × 8 @ RPE 8
This roughly means you estimate that you had two repetitions left.
A week later, you have slept poorly and are less well recovered.
You again perform:
100 kg × 8
but this time it feels like:
RPE 9.5
The numbers on the bar are identical.
But the sets were not equally demanding.
RPE makes that difference visible.
Why use RPE?
A program based entirely on fixed weights cannot always account for your day-to-day readiness.
Imagine the program says:
Bench press: 100 kg × 8
On one day, 100 kg may be appropriate.
On another day, the same weight may feel considerably heavier than expected.
RPE allows for autoregulation.
Instead, your program might say:
8 reps @ RPE 8
You then select or adjust the load so that the set finishes at approximately the intended effort.
That does not mean you simply train according to your mood.
You still use:
- the exercise
- reps
- sets
- progression
- previous performance
but RPE adds information about your current capacity.
What is autoregulation?
Autoregulation means adjusting parts of your training according to your current performance or readiness instead of having everything completely fixed in advance.
This can be done using:
- RPE
- RIR
- bar velocity
- performance-based load adjustments
The purpose is not to make your program random.
The purpose is to allow your program to respond to the natural variation in your performance.
Research on autoregulated resistance training suggests that both subjective methods such as RPE/RIR and objective approaches such as velocity-based training can be useful for developing strength.
The same weight can have a different RPE
Your strength is not identical every day.
Performance can be affected by factors including:
- sleep
- recovery
- stress
- nutrition
- previous training
- training volume
- illness
- time of day
- motivation
As a result:
100 kg × 8
might be RPE 7 in one workout and RPE 9 in another.
That does not necessarily mean your program is poor.
It means human performance varies.
RPE gives you a way to record that variation.
RPE and RIR – what is the difference?
RPE and RIR describe closely related concepts, but from slightly different perspectives.
RIR asks:
How many reps did I have left?
RPE asks:
How hard was the set?
In the RIR-based RPE model, the two are approximately related like this:

If you say:
2 RIR
that would typically correspond to approximately:
RPE 8
But this relationship is not an exact physical conversion.
Both are subjective estimates.
How accurate is RPE?
RPE is not perfect.
When RPE is interpreted through RIR, its accuracy depends largely on how well you can estimate the number of repetitions you had remaining.
Research indicates that these estimates generally become more accurate when training closer to failure, while estimation becomes more difficult further away from failure and with lighter loads performed for many repetitions.
That means:
RPE 9
is often easier to estimate meaningfully than, for example:
RPE 5
because distinguishing between zero and one possible additional rep is easier than distinguishing between five and seven possible reps.
RPE should therefore be treated as a practical estimate – not a laboratory measurement.
How do you learn to use RPE?
RPE becomes more useful when you learn to connect your perception with your actual performance.
Imagine you perform:
100 kg × 8 @ RPE 8
You are therefore estimating that you had approximately two reps remaining.
If you occasionally continue the set on an appropriate exercise and discover that you could actually have completed five additional reps, your RPE estimate was too low.
If you could only complete one more rep, the set was closer to RPE 9.
You do not need to do this all the time.
The point is to calibrate your estimate.
Over time, you can become better at recognizing the difference between, for example:
- RPE 7
- RPE 8
- RPE 9
- RPE 10
Does every set need an RPE?
No.
RPE is a tool, not a requirement.
There is rarely a need to spend mental energy rating RPE on every warm-up set or every small assistance exercise.
RPE is often most useful on working sets where load and progression matter to your programming.
For example:
Squat
3 × 5 @ RPE 8
or:
Incline chest press
3 × 8–10 @ RPE 8
This gives you a target for both performance and effort.
RPE and progressive overload
RPE can also make progression more visible.
Imagine:
Week 1:
100 kg × 8 @ RPE 9
Week 4:
100 kg × 8 @ RPE 7.5
The weight and reps are identical.
But the same performance now requires less perceived effort.
That may indicate that your capacity has improved.
The next step could therefore be:
102.5 kg × 8 @ RPE 8
In this way, RPE can be combined with progressive overload to help determine when increasing the load makes sense.

RPE and percentage of 1RM
Another way to prescribe strength training is through percentages of 1RM.
For example:
3 × 5 @ 80% of 1RM
This provides an objective load based on your maximal strength.
But a fixed percentage does not necessarily account for your readiness on a particular day.
RPE takes the opposite approach:
It reflects how the load actually feels that day.
The two methods do not have to compete.
You can, for example, use percentage of 1RM to choose a starting point and RPE to determine whether the load is appropriate for your current performance.

RPE is a tool – not an exact answer
It can be tempting to make RPE more precise than it really is.
There is not necessarily a meaningful difference between:
RPE 8.1
and:
RPE 8.2
RPE works best as a practical scale.
Used consistently, it can help you:
- adjust load to your daily readiness
- manage how hard you train
- compare effort between workouts
- identify progress that weight and reps alone may not show
- avoid turning every working set into a maximal test
But RPE should not stand alone.
It makes the most sense together with:
weight + reps + sets + training history + progression.
